FACING GENDER

A project for the Photo Festival 2021 in Dortmund at the gallery of heritage building Kultuort Depot.

A photography exhibition showcasing 12 contemporary photographers’ work that questions the role clichés and gives us an insight into social structures around gender and identity as well as the resulting relationships.

Industry: Arts and Culture

Services: Exhibition Design

Role: Concept and Design with a focus on Typography

Executed as a part of Master Studies at Fachhochschule Dortmund. In collaboration with my fellow students, My contribution was concept-focused around typography, design and using fabrics for translucency to expand the spatial environment.

Layers + Transparencies

The play of two contrasting elements - opaque walls and transparent cloth, creates an interesting scenography for the photographs. It also signifies intimacy, delicacy, mystery, hidden yet bold, open and inviting

It creates different layers of information for the viewer to understand the story of the photographer. Each artist has a text introduction along with the title, which the viewer can read before exploring the photographs.

The exhibition design incorporates large volumes of text which is typically unusual for a photography exhibition, but in this case, the typography incorporated helps the visitor understand the background story of the portraits photographed.

Different Views and Perspectives

As visitors walk through the atmospheric hall, they discover different works of different photographers. The exhibition keeps opening up as chapters of a book while visitors’ curiosity is triggered by the bold titles on coloured walls.
The colours create a cheerful ambience - a celebration of gender and identity.

Visitor Experience

At the end of the exhibition, the visitors had a chance to reflect on their identity, personality, and gender perception.
Using the mirror and an Instax camera, every visitor could be a part of the exhibition.
